On November 10, 2009, Nike Carstarphen, Co-founder of ACT, was recognized by the Alliance of Concerned Men (ACM) for her “contribution to the development of an innovative roadmap for peace: Training Guide for Preserving Life and Intervening in Crises in our Communities.” The training guide describes the violence intervention and gang mediation modelĀ  used by the ACM in several highly successful gang mediations in the Washington, DC area.

Nike, along with Carole Frampton (formerly of Search for Common Ground) and Maria Jessop (formerly at American University; currently at USIP) interviewed founding members Tyrone Parker and Arthur “Rico” Rush about their guiding principles and process and reviewed the dozens of news accounts of their successful mediations in order to identify and document the ACM’s gang mediation process. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has praised the work of the ACM and believes their model can be replicated in other communities across the U.S. with similar problems.

The training guide was presented to the public at the ACM’s first annual conference on November 10, 2009, held at the Congressional Auditorium at the US Capitol Visitor’s Center. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton served as Honorary Co-Chair of the event.
