What are the ACT Forums?

The ACT Forums are one of the premier sites for receiving/posting information on career and educational opportunities in the fields of peacebuilding, conflict transformation, development, international relations, humanitarian relief, civil society, public health and related fields. Over 200 organizations (non-profits, consulting companies, academic institutions, intergovernmental organizations, etc.) throughout the world use the Forums to recruit entry-level to advanced professionals for academic, professional and consulting opportunities. In 2005, over 5000 jobs, 500 scholarships, 200 grants and hundreds of events were posted to the site covering all regions of the world. The Forums are available for individuals seeking jobs, scholarships, internships and information on events, and for organizations interested in recruiting qualified candidates.

What is different about the ACT Forums compared to other jobs sites?

We believe that the ACT Forums provide a unique resource for jobs, scholarships, grants, events and networking in peacebuilding, conflict transformation, development, international relations, humanitarian relief, civil society, public health and related fields around the world.  Many of the opportunities posted on the ACT Forums are unique.  We also offer the opportunity to upload your resume to our database.  To see users' feedback on the forums click here.

I am interested in pursuing a career related to international conflict, what suggestions do you have?

We suggest that you subscribe to the ACT Forums, as you will have access to an abundance of opportunities on the site. We also encourage you to read our report based on interviews with 55 employers in international conflict, "Skills, Networks & Knowledge: Developing a Career in International Peace and Conflict Resolution.”  This report helps to fill a critical gap in the field, as it is the first of its kind to survey employers regarding career opportunities within international peace and conflict resolution.  The report provides practical recommendations for individuals interested in working in international conflict and has a wealth of recommended resources. To download or order the report go the publications section.

How is the information distributed?

Information is distributed through a daily e-digest tailored to a member’s desired settings. The Discussion and Resource Section is available to everyone. However to access the other sections (e.g., job announcements), one needs to become a registered and subscriber member.

What is the difference between registering for the ACT Site and Subscribing?

By registering on the ACT site, you gain access to some basic features such as the Discussion boards.  However to access the ACT Forums (jobs, scholarships, grants, events) you need to subscribe. By subscribing to the Forums you gain access to all the postings, can sign up to receive daily email updates of new postings, post your resume and more.

How do I Register for the Forums?

Registering will create an account with a username and password. Click on Register in the top, right-hand corner. The information you enter will form the basis of your Profile, and will later become important when you interact with other ACT members through chats and discussions. You need to Register before you can subscribe. (Note that registering only gives you access to basic site features, such as the discussion boards)

How do I Subscribe to the Forums?

To access the ACT Forums you need to follow these steps.

1) Register: at www.conflicttransformation.org – Follow the steps to register. See preceding question for further details. Basic tips when registering: When you create your username DO NOT use the @ symbol or your entire email address as this will cause errors if the administrators need to access your account. Please do not create any duplicate accounts. If you have any problems or concerns please email inquiries@ conflicttransformation.org.

2) Subscribe: Once you have registered, click on Subscribe Now and follow the steps.

3) Receiving Daily Updates: After you have subscribed, you will need to log in again to begin receiving your daily email update. After you have logged in, please click on “Jobs” or “Scholarships.” Then click on “Receive Email Digest” in the top left-hand corner. Click on your regions of interest, and then click on “Subscribe to List.” This will enable the system to custom design your email update with your selections. You can also access the information by logging onto the website. We recommend if you are applying for a job to also consult the posting on the ACT website as sometimes additional contact information or attached documents are provided.

Note the system currently only sends digests for jobs and scholarships. To view information on grants and events, you need to go directly to the ACT site.

4) Uploading Your Resume: As an ACT member, you can now upload your resume to our Resume Database. Potential employers are able to review the resume database in order to find candidates to fill positions.  To upload your resume, login and click on Jobs‘. Then click on ‘Post/View Resumes‘. Using the ACT Forums

How do I view the archives for each regional forum?

First, you need to be subscribed. Once you are subscribed, click the desired category (i.e. jobs, scholarships, grants). You can view postings either by searching through a geographic region or by doing a keyword search.

How do I search through the archives for a specific posting?

You can quickly search through the postings by doing a keyword search. Click on jobs (or scholarships, etc). The “Search” icon is located right above the “Geographic” category. For example, if you’re interested in postings in Colombia you can enter Colombia to do a key word search.

How do I apply for an opportunity posted on the ACT Forums?

In order to apply for an opportunity, please consult the posting, follow the specific instructions, and apply directly to the organization advertising the opportunity. Please always cite the ACT Forums in your applications. NOTE: ACT is not involved in the application process of a specific organization. As such, we can not answer questions about deadlines, application forms or job specifications. Furthermore, members can not apply online through ACT, they must follow the specific instructions as indicated in the postings.

How do I know if I am eligible to apply for a specific opportunity?

Please carefully read all of the necessary requirements before applying for opportunities on the ACT Forums.  In general, postings in the US and Western Europe require applicants to be citizens or permanent residents of these countries (unless otherwise specified in the posting). All postings specify the amount of experience (or none) they require of a potential candidate. If you do not meet the qualifications, please do not apply. If anyone repeatedly does blind applications without looking at the qualifications his/her account may be terminated.

How do I verify the legitimacy/accuracy of postings?

While ACT tries to ensure that all postings are from legitimate organizations, we encourage subscribers to be vigilant. If a posting seems suspicious, then we would encourage you to research the organization before proceeding further. Please also contact ACT regarding any concerns you may have about an organization.

What if I am searching for jobs/scholarships, can I post a request?

Due to the large number of users on the ACT forums, we do not allow personal requests for funding/jobs.  Thus we request that users do not attempt to post such inquiries.  Any users who violate this policy may have their accounts terminated.

Additional Questions

Does ACT offer any internship or job possibilities?

Any internship or job opportunities that arise at ACT will be posted through the ACT forums. Please do not apply directly to ACT if no opportunity has been listed.

Does ACT have any funding available for projects?

Unfortunately, ACT is not a funding organization and therefore does not accept proposals for projects. However, we do strongly encourage you to consult our scholarship and grants forums.  These forums will provide you with a database of organizations currently accepting applications for project proposals. We are also open to exploring developing cooperative relationships with potential partner organizations.

Can I view other ACT member’s resumes?

In order to ensure confidentiality, only organizations seeking candidates are able to view an ACT member’s resume.

How can my organization collaborate with ACT?

ACT partners with many local and international organizations. We welcome inquiries for potential partnership opportunities, although we must repeat that we are not a funding organization.
